The FAI Spring Days will also come to Calangianus, next Saturday, March 21st, and Sunday, March 22nd, with visits to Palazzo Corda, the elegant 19th-century Art Nouveau building, a symbol of the town's economic and cultural history. Mayor Fabio Albieri described it as "a beautiful building, purchased by the municipality several years ago and renovated, which represents the cultural hub of our town and aims to be a point of reference."
According to the FAI, the building was constructed in 1885 by Marco Corda (1833-1915), a pioneer of the Calangianus cork industry, who made it his home and the center of the first cork-related industrial activities. A testament to the prosperity of that period, the palace still retains the typical features of late-19th-century stately homes: two floors, a dramatic central staircase, stained-glass windows, and refined wall decorations.
According to the FAI, some rooms retain original features, such as fireplaces, stovetops, and antique ember radiators, while the large granite cellar in the basement was used until recently as a nightclub. Located in the center of town, between the church of Santa Giusta, the main square, and the market, the building has also hosted illustrious figures over time, including the writer Salvatore Farina.
Acquired by the Municipality in 2006, Palazzo Corda has undergone extensive restoration and is now preparing to become a key cultural center, with a library and spaces dedicated to cultural and social activities. It's no coincidence that Mayor Fabio Albieri calls it "the beating heart of the town's culture," destined to host events and initiatives, including the upcoming "Mirtò – l'arte del pane" (Mirtò – the art of bread) event, dedicated to the tradition of breadmaking.
The FAI tours will be led by "Apprentice Guides" from the Don Gavino Pes Technical Institute in Tempio Pausania. Visits to the Cork Museum, the Diocesan Museum of Sacred Art, and the Parish Church of Santa Giusta are also planned for the occasion.
