Italian exports will grow in 2025, but with marked differences between regions. Sardinia, not only recorded the lowest figure, but also the worst overall.

The latest Istat report on exports from Italian regions provides the data.

In the period January-June 2025 , we read in the update released on 11 September by the Institute, «the trend growth of national exports in value (+2.1%) is the synthesis of differentiated territorial dynamics: foreign sales are increasing for the Centre (+10.7%) and, to a lesser extent, for the North-West (+1.5%), while a slight reduction is recorded for the North-East (-0.5%) and larger declines for the South (-6.6%) and the Islands (-13.3%)» .

"In the first six months of 2025," the report continues, "the Italian regions that recorded the most significant year-on-year increases in export value were: Lazio (+17.4%) , Tuscany (+11.8%), Abruzzo (+10.1%), and Friuli-Venezia Giulia (+6.6%). Conversely, the largest year-on-year declines in exports were recorded in Sardinia (-17.3%) , Campania (-15.5%), Sicily (-11.2%), and Molise (-9.8%)."

The report highlights that the island's data were mainly affected by lower sales of coke and refined petroleum products (-21.6%).

In the provincial analysis of exports, the positive performances of Florence, Rome, Trieste, Milan and Frosinone are highlighted, while the largest negative contributions come from Cagliari , together with Naples, Syracuse, Gorizia, Cagliari and Turin.

As for the second quarter of 2025 , Istat estimates a quarterly growth in exports for the Centre (+4.6%) and for the North-West (+2.1%), a decline for the North-East (-2.4%) and a wider contraction for the South, Sardinia and Sicily (-14.4%).
