In the fourth quarter of 2021, Istat estimates a cyclical growth in exports, albeit with different intensities, for all territorial divisions with a more decisive sprint for the Center-South: + 8.8% for the South and Islands, +5, 2% for the Center, + 3.6% for the North-East and + 0.8% for the North-West.

"On a trend basis, growth remains sustained, slowing down compared to the previous quarter for the Northern areas, accelerating for the Center and South and Islands". Istat comments highlighting that "overall, 2021 closes with a strong growth in exports determined for about three quarters by the increase in sales abroad - in particular to EU markets - of the Northern areas".

Sardinia is the region that records a more marked increase in exports (+ 63.4%) while Lombardy "alone, contributes to the increase in national exports by 5 percentage points, half of which is explained by the increase in sales of metals, chemicals and machinery ". Look at Istat.

In 2021, compared to the previous year, the exports of the regions show a very sustained growth (+ 18.2%) and widespread at a territorial level: the increase in exports is very marked for the Islands (+ 46.4%) , around the national average for the North-West (+ 19.2%) and the North-East (+ 18.0%), more contained for the Center (+ 15.3%) and above all, for the South (+ 6.6%).

Overall in 2021, all Italian regions, with the exception of Basilicata (-14.7%), recorded increases in exports: the most marked for Sardinia (+ 63.4%) and Sicily (+ 38.8%), the lowest for Puglia (+ 4.9%) and Abruzzo (+ 5.0%).

The positive performances of four regions - Lombardy (+ 19.1%), Emilia-Romagna (+ 16.9%), Veneto (+ 16.7%) and Piedmont (+ 20.6%) - contribute for 11.6% percentage points to the increase in national exports.

In 2021, the increase in sales of base metals and metal products from Lombardy and Veneto, of machinery and equipment from Lombardy and Emilia-Romagna and refined petroleum products from Sicily and Sardinia explains the growth of the 'national export. On the contrary, the contraction in the export of base metals and metal products from Tuscany, of pharmaceutical, chemical-medicinal and botanical items from Veneto, Lazio, Liguria and Marche and of motor vehicles from Basilicata provides a negative contribution of 0.9 points to the change in exports.

Over the year as a whole, the greatest contributions to the trend growth of national exports derive from the increase in sales from Lombardy to Germany (+ 22.9%) and France (+ 20.7%) and from Emilia-Romagna and Tuscany towards the United States (+ 33.3% and 48.6% respectively). On the other hand, negative contributions come from the drop in exports from Lazio to the United States (-28.0%) and Russia (-54.9%) and from Basilicata to the United States (-45.4%).

The provincial export analysis shows positive performances for almost all the Italian provinces: the highest positive contributions are found for Milan, Turin, Brescia, Florence, Vicenza, Rome, Bergamo, Syracuse, Modena and Bologna. Negative dynamics were reported for Arezzo, Potenza, Piacenza, Rovigo, Latina, Ascoli Piceno, Palermo, Bari, Foggia and Caltanissetta.
