Sardinia is the first Italian region for percentage growth in sales abroad by small and medium-sized enterprises.

In the first half of the year, 331 million euros of products were placed abroad, registering a + 41% on 2020 and + 62% on 2019, the best growth performance among all Italian regions, even higher than that of Lombardy and Veneto.

The result emerges from the analysis of the ISTAT data carried out by the Research Department of Confartigianato Imprese in the dossier "Export dynamics in Sardinia in the first half of 2021".

Among the categories of goods with a greater increase in sales compared to 2019, there are metal products (+ 108%) for a sales value of 234 million euros, and foodstuffs (+ 14.5%) and a value of 77 million euros. On the contrary, among the declining sectors, furniture (-43% compared to 2019) and wood (-25%).

The total amount of exports produced by the entire Sardinian production system (including the refining of crude oil and its derivatives) also increased in the first half of 2021 compared to the same period of 2020; the growth of 52.2% corresponds to a value of 2 billion and 476 million of assets placed in other countries. On the other hand, the comparison with 2019 is still negative: -5.2%.

"A nice surprise to be at the top of a national ranking as important as the export one - comments Maria Amelia Lai, president of Confartigianato Imprese Sardegna - means that all over the world there is a desire for Sardinian products made by micro, small and medium-sized companies. companies, and it also means that this virus has not affected the desire of entrepreneurial realities to study, work and commit to place their products beyond the Tyrrhenian Sea and beyond the Mediterranean ”. "Our region has been, for some years, also thanks to the commitment of our Association, increasingly export oriented - continues President Lai - moreover, the appearance of small and micro enterprises towards the world, also driven by the strong economic shock of the crisis caused by the pandemic, has given an extraordinary boost to overseas sales which have started to grow with an important progression. If the trend continues, taking into account, we could close the year with almost 800 million products exported. This would be a sign of a structural and lasting progression that would go beyond Covid, the turbulence in emerging countries, protectionism, tariffs and Brexit and beyond all the factors that affect exports around the world ".

Among the provinces, again in the first quarter of 2021, and again produced by small and medium-sized production activities, products for a value of 172 million (11 of food products and 156 of metal products) crossed the sea on Cagliari, with an increase of + 37% compared to 2020 and 65% compared to 2019. 65 million euros of products departed from South Sardinia (56 metal and 5 food) with an increase of 46% on 2020 and 143% on 2019.

From Northern Sardinia, 54 million euros of goods left (40 million of food and 9 of wood products) with + 49% on 2020 and + 7% on 2019. 23 million euros of goods were placed from Nuoro (17 metals and 4 food) with + 72% on 2020 and + 144% on 2019. Oristano closes with 17 million goods placed, almost all are food products, with an increase of 18% on 2020 and 20% on 2019.
