Green light from the Council of Environment Ministers of the European Union to the agreement to put an end to combustion engines within the next 13 years.

The EU Council of Environment Ministers in fact announced that it had reached an agreement on the package of green measures "Fit for 55" for the climate, a pact that provides, among other things, the 100% reduction of anhydride emissions carbon dioxide by 2035 for new cars and vans and therefore the stop to the sale of petrol and diesel cars by that date.

The measure is intended to help achieve the continent's climate goals, in particular carbon neutrality by 2050.

At the request of countries including Germany and Italy, the EU-27 has also agreed to consider a future green light for the use of alternative technologies such as synthetic fuels or plug-in hybrids if capable of achieving the complete elimination of

greenhouse gas emissions.

The European Ministers of the Environment - meeting in Luxembourg - have also approved a five-year extension of the exemption from CO2 obligations granted to so-called "niche" producers, ie those who produce less than 10,000 vehicles per year , until the end of 2035.

The clause, sometimes called the “Ferrari amendment” , will benefit luxury brands in particular.

These measures now need to be negotiated with Members of the European Parliament.
