The European Union has begun the process of becoming independent from Russian gas.
The regulation for the gradual ban on gas and LNG imports from Russia was published today in the Official Journal of the EU. The RepowerEU regulation roadmap will therefore enter into force tomorrow: the gradual ban will begin to apply starting March 18th in several stages, until Russia completely eliminates Russian gas imports by autumn 2027.
To date , only Hungary and Slovakia still import Russian oil , which accounts for about 3% of total EU crude oil imports.
"To avoid serious security risks and energy dependencies resulting from continued trade with Moscow in the energy sector," the European Commission reiterates "its commitment to ensuring the phasing out of all remaining Russian oil imports by the end of 2027," the document reads.
Brussels also assures that it will "actively work together, in a spirit of solidarity, with the Member States directly concerned and with other Member States to identify appropriate measures to minimize the potential risks identified during the assessment, facilitating access to alternative supplies."
