The update of Terna's 2021-2025 "Driving Energy" Industrial Plan also includes investments for the Tyrrhenian Link, the new state-of-the-art submarine cable that will connect Sardinia to Campania and Sicily.

It is a new electrical corridor in the center of the Mediterranean, 950 kilometers long and 1000 MW of power. An infrastructural work of international importance that will improve the electricity exchange capacity, favor the development of renewable sources and the reliability of the grid. The overall project includes two sections: the east from Sicily to the peninsula and the west from Sicily to Sardinia.

In Sardinia, Sicily and especially in Campania there is a strong production from non-programmable renewable sources, solar and wind power, which is constantly increasing.

The landing of the marine cables will be made with the Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) technique, a straight drilling that avoids open pit excavations on the beaches.

From the Terra Mala landing site, we read on the Terna site, “the invisible underground cables will mainly travel along existing roads, for about 31 kilometers, leaving the environment and landscape unchanged. Inclusion in the national transmission grid will be made possible through a direct current into alternating current conversion station and a marshalling yard with short overhead connections to existing lines. Both stations will be built in areas close to the Selargius power station. Two distinct possibilities were considered for the location of the conversion station: one in the municipality of Selargius and the other in that of Settimo San Pietro ”.
