Sardinia is preparing to approve the End-of-Life Law. The proposal from Campo Largo (first signatory Roberto Deriu of the Democratic Party), which is being examined by the Regional Council starting today, mirrors the text written by the "Coscioni" association, although the Health Commission, chaired by Carla Fundoni (Democratic Party), approved a version with some amendments. Specifically, the Democrat explained, the amendment sought to address the government's concerns about the same measure approved by Tuscany. The government has challenged that law, and all in opposition are convinced the Sardinian law will suffer the same fate. This is also because, in the meantime, Parliament is currently legislating on the matter.

From the beginning, the discussion focused on this question: is it appropriate for the Sardinian Assembly to work on a law knowing that Rome will appeal to the Constitutional Court? The process continued, however. "We attempted to craft a streamlined proposal that implements the Constitutional Court's ruling number 242 of 2019." This ruling introduced the possibility of a medicalized procedure for assisted suicide, subject to review by the National Health Service and the opinion of the ethics committee, and prompted the legislature to implement comprehensive legislation.

But which legislator? The Region felt entrusted with this task. On the other hand, as Deriu himself emphasized in recent weeks, "as Regions, we have the responsibility to organize the healthcare system; it is our duty to evaluate the circumstances addressed by the law. Furthermore, precisely because there is no national law of reference, we must pass a regional law. This is the duty of a legislator."

The majority rapporteur is Carla Fundoni. The minority rapporteur is Corrado Meloni of the Brothers of Italy (FdI). In his report, he cites another Court ruling, number 66 of 2025, regarding the need to prevent the risk of abuse against weak and vulnerable people, because in situations of fragility and suffering, the decision to end one's life could be induced or encouraged by third parties.
