Sardinia is the third region in Italy in which employment , between employees and self-employed workers, in 2021 increased more than in 2020 even if the gap with respect to 2019 still remains deep.

These are the numbers of the Research Office of Confartigianato Imprese Sardegna , which analyzed Istat data: in the island in 2021 employees grew by 2.5% compared to 2020 (+ 11 thousand units) reaching 563 thousand units. Compared to 2019 , however, the trend is down by 3.2% , marking a gap of 19 thousand places .

"The prolongation of the war in Ukraine, the amplification of the energy crisis and the persistence of criticalities in the procurement and prices of raw materials - comments Maria Amelia Lai , President of Confartigianato Imprese Sardegna - could interrupt the recovery process of the labor market after the recession caused by the pandemic. We hope this is not the case: the data show that our region, despite an employment gap to be recovered compared to 2019, is more resilient than other regions of Italy ".

THE DATA - Observing the data relating to the employment rate (employees and self-employed between 15-64 years), if in Italy the figure worsens compared to the level of 2019, decreasing by 0.8%, in Sardinia the comparison between the 3 years ( 2019-2020-2021) is essentially positive. In fact, the employment data of 2021 (53.6% of employed) on 2020 (51.7% of employed) say of a + 1.8%, while those of 2021 on 2019 (53.7% of employed) still see a slight gap of 0.1%.

More worrying is the unemployment situation: in 2019 it was 14.9%, in 2020 it dropped to 13.2% to rise to 13.5% in 2021. To these data we must add those of unemployment , which in 2019 was 36.6%, increased to 40.2% in 2020 and dropped to 37.9% in 2021.

IN THE PROVINCES - Looking at the provinces, in absolute values, in Cagliari there are 161,000 employed in 2021, of which 73,000 are women, 15,000 are unemployed and 86,000 are inactive. In Nuoro there were 72 thousand employed, of which 31 thousand were women, with 6 thousand unemployed and 51 thousand inactive. In Oristano 50 thousand employed, of which 21 thousand women, with 9 thousand unemployed and 38 thousand inactive. In Sassari-Gallura the employed are 166 thousand, of which 69 thousand are women, with 25 thousand unemployed and 125 thousand inactive. In South Sardinia there are 114 thousand employed, of which 46 thousand are women, with 17 thousand unemployed and 85 thousand inactive.

THE TREND - In fact, another variable influences the trend of the labor market, that of the difficulty of finding : in Sardinia this percentage stood, in April 2022, at 35.6%, increased by 13 basis points compared to the figure of 2019.

In Italy, the share of hard-to-find professions on the market is 40.4% (it was 26.5% in 2019). "This contradiction between non-recovery of employment and the difficulty of finding the figures by companies becomes even more evident in the face of the latest Excelsior-Unioncamere estimates for the quarter April-June 2022 - resumes Lai - which sees difficulties in finding the island for almost 1 out of 3 workers equal to 4 thousand incomes of the 11 thousand total expected. Most of them are specialized figures who would find employment in the manufacturing sector, but also in construction and in the maintenance of buildings. In fact, workers are particularly difficult to hire in the activities metalworking and electromechanical (64.5%), workers specialized in construction and building maintenance (63.5%) and transport operators (64.6%) ".
