In my work as a nutritionist, I often meet patients who are convinced that their problem is just a “lack of willpower”. In reality, behind the difficulties in maintaining a balanced diet there is often a very common phenomenon: emotional hunger.
Understanding and distinguishing this form of hunger is the first step to dealing with it effectively. Emotional hunger is the need to eat not because of physical necessity, but to manage emotions. It can be stress, boredom, sadness, anxiety, anger or even happiness.
Unlike physiological hunger, which emerges gradually and can be satisfied with any type of food, emotional hunger is sudden, urgent and oriented towards specific foods, often high in calories and rich in sugar or fat. Emotional hunger is not a personal failure, but a signal that something inside us needs attention.
This is why the nutritional path must take into account the person in his entirety: body, mind and emotions. Only in this way can we build a healthy and lasting relationship with food.
