One in two lambs is Sardinian and will end up on Italian tables for Easter. This was revealed by the Igp Sardinian Lamb Consortium (Contas) which expresses satisfaction with the record prices reached in April.

For Easter in the first two weeks of April 65 thousand IGP-branded lambs were slaughtered, 78% of Sardinian ones. And the made in Sardinia product also has the lion's share at national level, counting 50% of the approximately 200 thousand lambs slaughtered this month throughout the Peninsula.

RECORD QUOTATION - But the exploit is recorded in the price. Lamb had never reached these prices. On average, the Sardinian IGP lamb was paid to the shepherd 70 euros per head, while at the stalls of large-scale distribution, prices were recorded around 90 euros per whole lamb.

The Sardinian IGP lamb supply chain records a total turnover of approximately 6.5 million euros for Easter, 5.7 of which will go to the 2,600 farms that slaughtered lambs this month.

PRODUCTS OF THE TERRITORY - "The pandemic and now also the international tensions due to the war - says the president of Contas Battista Cualbu - have brought consumers even closer to local products. Those who buy do so with greater awareness and check the origin of what it brings to the table. This has increased the demand for Sardinian products, and in particular for lamb which is the symbol of the Easter menu in the face of a limited supply given the advanced season of the lambing ".

EXCELLENT QUALITY - "The higher price also corresponds to an excellent quality of the product - says the director of Contas Alessandro Mazzette - as the rains that have fallen in Sardinia in recent weeks have favored the development of the typical spring forage essences that have transmitted to the meat of our lambs the characteristic flavor and the unique quality sought by consumers ".
