The regional electoral guarantee board has declared Alessandra Todde to have forfeited her position as regional councilor, and she would therefore also lose her position as president of the Region.

After a long examination of the expenses incurred during the electoral campaign at the beginning of 2024, some non-compliances were detected which led to the issuing of an injunction order addressed to the Regional Council, which must establish a date for the decision on the forfeiture: the decision is entrusted to the highest Sardinian assembly.

According to leaks, all the contested aspects will be clarified - Todde had already done so through a brief - and the appeal of the decision notified this evening will proceed.

"The notification from the Court of Appeal is an administrative act that I will challenge in the appropriate venues ," Todde clarified. "I have full confidence in the judiciary and since it is not a definitive provision, I will calmly continue to do my job in the interest of the Sardinian people ."

The reactions

Meanwhile, the opposition is attacking : "If President Todde cheated with the election expenses, it is right to go back to the vote," comments Fausto Piga, deputy group leader of Fratelli d'Italia in the Regional Council . "Elections can be won or lost, but the rules must always be respected."

"I don't know the details of the story but if the guarantee board ends up declaring a President of the Region dismissed - says Salvatore Deidda, FdI deputy and President of the IX Transport Commission of the Chamber of Deputies - it means that the proposed documentation actually has flaws and errors and with all due respect it is a very bad figure because either they don't know how to account for electoral expenses or they think they are smarter than others and elections are won by respecting the rules . Now they will try in every way not to dismiss but they should make amends for their mistakes and we demand transparency".

For Pietro Pittalis , regional secretary of Forza Italia , the law «is the same for everyone and, therefore, we are certain that it will be respected with due attention. We have always had faith in the judiciary, beyond political affiliations. In this case, the superficiality in the reporting of electoral expenses is striking and for this reason it is necessary to clarify each step . We do not express judgments on a decision of the judiciary, also because we do not know the facts in detail, but it is right to delve into the matter for the
respect that is owed to the Sardinian people and to the institution that must represent them."

Solidarity with the president comes instead from the secretary of the Unione Popolare Cristiana (UPC): «Todde is right to have faith in the judiciary. It is the only way to clarify this affair, because Sardinia needs government bodies in full function. We of the center-left do not believe in conspiracies, unlike the center-right».

Senator Marco Meloni (PD) is also close to the president, sharing "what the president said, who clarified that it is right to respect the decisions of the judiciary, and at the same time expressed the will to continue to operate with serenity and determination in the interest of the Sardinians, while awaiting the ruling of the judges of merit on the announced appeal. I hope that in these venues the will of the voters can be guaranteed to be respected".
