"It makes no sense to talk about a blockade: when alliances are formed, everyone must have equal dignity. There can be no primogeniture of any kind. And, above all, it makes no sense to talk about a blockade because the Democratic Party must be the Democratic Party."
Democratic Party Senator Graziano Delrio stated this in an interview with Corriere della Sera. "We," he added, "are very different from the Five Star Movement and the AVS, and we have a different role in the coalition. We are the largest party, and we have an obligation to give our presence in the coalition a governing profile. To truly be the linchpin of the alliance, we must demonstrate that we can address the problems—the very problems that the Vannacci-style right-wingers currently think they can solve with formulas that are cruel to say the least."
"Let's take the issue of immigration," Delrio continues, "we can't just be outraged by Vannacci's words; we must propose solutions. Immigration is a huge fuel for the right's engine. We must fight illegal immigration and explain that only legal immigration can exist, and therefore we must change the failed Bossi-Fini law, which effectively prevents legal entry into the country, as businesses well know."
"I don't understand why Renzi is a problem," he continues. "The program will decide who is in and who is out of the coalition. By only talking about coexistence among ourselves, we are alienating citizens from the political system. The program needs to be developed quickly. The Democratic Party must present its comprehensive proposals to the allies, involving the country and its leaders," Delrio concludes.
