Sardinia in the red zone due to the risk of death in the workplace.

The alarm is raised by the latest report from the Vega Workplace Safety and Environment Observatory of Mestre , which underlines that on the island there is an "incidence of risk" 25% higher than the national average. A sad record that Sardinia shares together with Valle d'Aosta, Trentino-Alto Adige, Puglia, Calabria and Umbria.

«The incidence of fatal accidents - explains the Observatory - indicates the number of workers who died while working in a given area (region or province) for every million employed people present in the same. This index allows us to compare the accident phenomenon between the different regions, even though they are characterized by a different working population." It is underlined that this is the "true risk indicator for workers in our country, as it evaluates the number of victims compared to the working population. A valuable mapping for all those who work for safety at work."

The numbers on the island – In Sardinia, where around 576 thousand people are employed, 5 victims have been recorded since the beginning of the year, for an incidence of 8.7, against a national average of 6.4.

«We have reached the first quarter of 2024 – the comment of Mauro Rossato , president of the Vega Observatory – and, unfortunately, the projections of tragedies at work continue to remain dramatically stable if not worse».

Dramatic data - The Observatory also reels off the dramatic data of the tragedies that occurred at work: «There are 191 victims at work in Italy, of which 151 at work (3 more than in March 2023: +2%) and 40 in itinere (8 fewer than in March 2023). Lombardy still takes the black jersey for the highest number of victims at work (28). They are followed by: Puglia (15), Emilia-Romagna (14), Campania (12), Lazio and Tuscany (11), Piedmont (10), Trentino-Alto Adige and Sicily (9), Calabria (6), Veneto and Sardinia ( 5) , Liguria (4), Umbria and Friuli-Venezia Giulia (3), Valle d'Aosta, Abruzzo and Marche (2). Basilicata and Molise record no victims in the first quarter of 2024.

The sectors and the victims - At the end of the first quarter of 2024 - we read in the report - it is still the Construction sector that recorded the highest number of deaths at work: 25. Followed by Manufacturing Activities (19), from Transport and Warehousing (13) and Commerce (10).

The age group numerically most affected by fatal accidents at work is between 55 and 64 years old (54 out of a total of 151). There were 10 women who lost their lives while working in March 2024, while 6 lost their lives while traveling, i.e. on the home-work journey. There were 37 foreigners who died at work, while 13 died due to an accident while commuting.

Finally, Wednesday appears to be the most mournful day of the week, i.e. the one on which the most fatal accidents occurred in the first quarter of the year (21.2%).
