The pianist and conductor of Israeli-Argentine nationality Daniel Barenboim has announced a "step back" due to a "serious neurological disease".

"It is with a combination of pride and sadness that I announce to you that for the next few months I will take a step back from some of my concert activities, in particular my direction commitments - he wrote on social media -. Now I have to focus as much as possible on my physical well-being. Music has always been and continues to be an essential and lasting part of my life. I have lived my entire life in and through music, and will continue to do so as long as my health permits. Looking back and forth, I am not only happy, but deeply satisfied ”.

Since 1992 he has been musical director of the Berlin State Opera . It was at the Teatro alla Scala from 2011 to 2015.

Born in Buenos Aires to Russian parents of Jewish descent, he also has Israeli, Spanish and Palestinian citizenship. He made his debut as a pianist at the age of seven in his hometown and studied with maestro Vincenzo Scaramuzza.

He created a foundation and an orchestra to promote cooperation between young Israeli and Arab musicians. He conducted the Vienna New Year's Concert three times, most recently in 2022.
