A medical student originally from Ara'ra (occupied since 1948) and resident in Italy for about ten years, the Palestinian Dahood Jamal won the first edition of the “ Contra a la gherra slam ” organized by the Sardinian section of LIPS (Italian Poetry Slam League) in the Tirrindò cultural club in Sassari.

The poetry competition - which saw a predominance of texts in Sardinian Limba with a mix of styles and genres and with themes linked to current events, against war and military occupation and for peace in Palestine and Ukraine - was presented and animated by the MC (Master of Ceremonies) Giovani Salis , with the support of Elisa Brau as competition notary and saw the participation as special guest of the rapper Futta with a tribute to the poem “Pazi e Gherra” by the Sassari native Costantino Strinna.

Dahood Jamal, at his debut on the stages of the Poetry Slam, prevailed over the other participants – gaining access to the final stages of the Poetry Slam Sardinia Championship – thanks to the evocative power of the poems in Arabic “76 autumns” and “The dawn under the rubble” which bear witness to the resistance and daily struggle against ethnic cleansing and Israeli occupation suffered by the Palestinian population.

Second place went to Marta Meloni from Nuoro with verses from her first poetry collection "Tornerò alle tue lands. Vita, memorie e lotta" published by Catartica Edizioni, third place (with equal merit) went to Luca Sedda from Gavoi, Roberto Nieddu from Burgos and Silvia Piana from Sorso.

Competing with them are the other poets and performers: Isidoro Carta from Porto Torres, Frantziscu Cambiganu from Pattada and Marieddu Demontis from Ossi.

The special event was organized in collaboration with A Foras Contra a s'ocupatzione militare de sa Sardigna , the movement that brings together activists and organizations fighting to free Sardinia, the most militarized region in Italy and Europe, from the over 35 thousand hectares of land under military servitude, equal to approximately 61% of the total Italian military servitudes.

These are the dates of the next Poetry Slams valid for the Sardinian championship of LIPS 2024/25: February 26 and March 19 Caralis Poetry Slam at the Radio X Social Club in Cagliari; March 7 Sa Domu Ocupada in Cagliari; March 14 PT Poetry Slam at the Taberna Cervisia in Porto Torres; March 15 CAATS Tournament at the Spazio Bunker in Sassari.
