All set for the nineteenth edition of Creuza de Mà - Musica per Cinema, the festival conceived and directed by director Gianfranco Cabiddu and organized by the cultural association Backstage. It will be held from July 23 to 27 in Carloforte, among the charm of the alleys, the charm of the old movie theaters, the magic of the Giardino di note and the Ex Stabilimento Tonnare di Porto Paglia.

Also this year Creuza de Mà confirms its vocation to deeply intertwine music and cinema, in a constant dialogue between sounds and images that translates into a harmonious and necessary union that the Festival declines in its various aspects and formats: fiction cinema, documentaries, archive films with live soundtracks, short films. Among the most anticipated moments, the double homage to Berlinguer with the cinema of Andrea Segre and the notes of Massimo Zamboni, the suggestive sounds of Round Midnight with the pianist Rita Marcotulli, and the exciting harp concert by Marcella Carboni, the unmissable final concert with Anna Tifu and Romeo Scaccia .

Like every year, alongside the rich programme of screenings, concerts and meetings with guests, Creuza de Mà also confirms itself as a space for growth and discussion on music and sound applied to cinema, for new generations of artists. Thanks to Campus – music and sound for cinema and audiovisuals, which has been an integral part of the festival since 2017 with the SummerSchool for directors and young composers, a project that has since then become the backbone of Creuza de Mà. A high-level training course that reconnects all the elements of the sound chain for cinema and audiovisuals. In Carloforte you study, you learn, you create: a concrete and unique opportunity for girls and boys from all over Italy. In addition to the masterclasses and meetings with the masters, scheduled every morning, the Campus offers the opportunity to attend the screening of short films made by students of the Centro di Cinematografia Sperimentale and set to music as part of the project, testifying to the educational and creative value of this course.

"The meeting between the Campus project - Music and sound for cinema and the Creuza de Mà festival represents a fundamental moment for the cultural and professional growth of our territory", says Matteo Frate, Director of the Fondazione Sardegna Film Commission. " A union that celebrates music for cinema not only as an artistic language, but as an educational tool and strategic vision . As Sardegna Film Commission we strongly believe in this vision. A dream and a route that speak the language of quality, of talent, of Sardinia as a place of cultural production of excellence. It is along this "Creuza de Mà" that we imagine the future of our cinema".

Among the most beloved titles by critics and audiences in the recent film season, Berlinguer - La grande ambizione will be presented in Carloforte, the latest film by Andrea Segre with the extraordinary soundtrack by Iosonouncane, aka Jacopo Incani, a talented composer originally from Buggerru but a protagonist of the national and international electronic scene for years. Multiple nominee for the David di Donatello, with 2 victories, and the Nastri d'Argento, Berlinguer - La grande ambizione is a story by Enrico Berlinguer between public and private that retraces the period from 1973 to 1978, up to the famous speech at the Festa Nazionale dell'Unità in Genoa. The film will be presented by Andrea Segre, who will meet the festival audience (Saturday 26 July, 9 pm) to talk about his cinema and his relationship with music.

Iosonouncane also signs the soundtrack of another title in the program: Lirica Ucraina , a documentary by Francesca Mannocchi recently awarded at the David di Donatello. Francesca Mannocchi, among the best war correspondents in Europe, takes the viewer to the conflict zones through the stories of the survivors (Saturday 26 July, 6:30 pm).

Among the films on the program is Musicanti con la Pianola (Thursday, July 24, 6:30 p.m.), a documentary by Matteo Malatesta dedicated to two milestones of film music in our country, Pivio and Aldo De Scalzi. The two composers, established presences at the festival, return to Creuza de Mà again this year in this new guise, protagonists of a film dedicated to their life and career, told through the testimonies of the many directors with whom they have worked, including Ferzan Ozpetek, Enzo Monteleone, Alessandro Gassmann and the Manetti bros. The program will be enriched by the screening of Vangelo secondo Maria directed by Paolo Zucca, who will present the film together with the composer of the music Fabio Massimo Capogrosso (Thursday, July 24, 9 p.m.).

A special event of this edition, dedicated to the memory of Enrico Berlinguer, will be the film-concert by Massimo Zamboni (Friday 25 July, 11 pm), guitarist of CCCP , with the screening of Arrivederci, Berlinguer!. The film by Michele Mellara and Alessandro Rossi, made with archive material from the documentary L'addio a Enrico Berlinguer, filmed during the funeral of the secretary of the PCI by numerous Italian directors including Scola, Pontecorvo, Rosi, Maselli, comes to life thanks to the soundtrack performed live by Massimo Zamboni, transforming itself into an engaging film-concert.

Among the highlights of the festival are the highly anticipated live performances, including the unmissable sunset concert, which this year will be held in a new location for the festival: the Ex Stabilimento Tonnare di Porto Paglia , a place of great historical value for the island and a symbol of its history and deep connection with the sea. For the occasion, this extraordinary space will open its doors to the community and the festival audience, hosting the evocative harp concert by Marcella Carboni (Friday 25 July, 7:30 p.m.).

And then again Rita Marcotulli (Thursday 24 July, 11pm) who will bring her music to the Giardino di Note in an evocative live performance that combines original compositions and improvisation, with tributes to cinema and great authors of Italian music such as Domenico Modugno and Pino Daniele, the DJ set by Max Viale (Saturday 26 July, 11pm) and the Film Music Concert, opening of the festival in the central square (Wednesday 23 July, 9.30pm), with unpublished scores arranged for band by Pivio and Pasquale Catalano performed by the Carloforte Music Band.

The nineteenth edition will close with the consolidated event organized in collaboration with Carloforte Musica Festival, with the concert by Anna Tifu and Romeo Scaccia (Sunday 27 July, 9:30 pm) . Accompanied by the Carloforte Festival Orchestra, conducted by Alevtina Ioffe, the famous violinist together with the pianist and composer will give life to an evocative musical journey between the romantic Serenade by Tchaikovsky and the cinematic intensity of tango. An encounter between Europe and South America that celebrates the evocative power of music as a universal language.

As part of the Campus project, short films by students who graduated from the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia, set to music as part of the Campus 2023/24 project, will be screened . The “Young Composers Award for Cinema Music ad honorem" will also be awarded, named after Alessandro Speranza, a young composer who died prematurely.
