“If you will give me full confidence again, I will be the president of a Movement that says no to the massive increase in military spending on the state budget, especially at such a time. But we will say yes to a shocking investment in the energy transition towards renewables, yes to an unprecedented commitment by the State on support networks for families, companies in crisis, workers who have to choose whether to pay their bills or go shopping or fill up on fuel. ".
Giuseppe Conte, on the eve of the vote of the members for the election of the M5S president which is held on 27 and 28 March, asks the pentastellati for trust and warns Mario Draghi: the Movement will vote against the increase in military spending to 2% of GDP , an agreement reached by the EU countries at the push of Joe Biden.
The former premier asks for a victory with a wide margin: "I am not interested in taking 50.1% of the votes, on the contrary, if the result were so small I would be the first to take a step back leaving the Movement that needs strong leadership and a strong investiture ".
A warning also to internal opponents: “In the event of a decisive reconfirmation, things will change. We have offered to the outside the image of a divided, contentious, contradictory M5S, but now we can no longer afford this weakness. I cannot accept that there are those who are rowing against our battles, our political position. I cannot allow those within us who work for their own interests ".
On the Draghi government: “An emergency government that is not the one of our dreams, in which we have defended our achievements that otherwise would have been canceled. But now it is not enough to remain on the defensive, do not vote for me if you think that the Movement should be there in the button rooms rather than in the territories and among the people. Don't vote for me if you think it should become an extremely moderate, conservative political force, compatible with the past and fearful of the future. Don't vote for me if you want a movement that tries to please everyone even at the cost of being a bad copy of other parties traditionally divided into currents ”.
