He was born as a goalkeeper, grew up as a defender and became the coach of big companies.
Sir Claudio Ranieri wore gloves – when there were any – to defend the goal when he played for the San Saba team, the district where he was born and raised, in the southern area of central Rome, wedged between Testaccio, the Aventine and the Circus Maximus.
From the drawer of memories appears a photo that portrays a sixteen-year-old Sir Claudio with his companions: it was 1967.
On that phase of the Cagliari coach's life there is an old testimony from his childhood friend Maurizio Berruti: «In our group there were kids from very poor families and others who were richer», he said, «I think Claudio has the ability to understand the players because as a young man he was able to experience a situation of this kind ».
