Sardinia still protagonist at the XXI International Wine Competition of the National Association "Città del Vino", held last weekend in Sambuca di Sicilia (AG), which confirms itself as the most important in Italy having reached the remarkable milestone of 1400 wine samples members and about 100 grappas.

Italy was represented by 19 Regions, but those with the highest number of samples were Sicily (121 labels), Sardinia (99), Emilia Romagna and Piedmont (85), Tuscany (76) and Lazio (72).

«Our island was represented by 36 companies with 99 wines competing out of a total of over 1,400 samples, coming not only from Italy (1,170 samples), Portugal (99 wines), Moldova (77), Brazil (23 ), followed by Croatia, Germany, Spain, Austria, France, Luxembourg and South Korea», the regional coordination of Città del Vino announced.

The wines of Sardinian wineries obtained a total of 28 medals divided as follows:

  • 1 Grand Gold Medal (for scores between 92/100 and 100/100);

  • 20 Gold Medals (for scores between 85/100 and 91.09/100);

  • 7 Silver Medals (in the categories reserved for "Bio", Spumante, Nebbiolo and volcanic wines - scores ranging from 82/100 to 84.09/100);

Many scores with equal merit and, above all, also for this edition, and it is the third time it has happened, with the exception of the special prizes in the categories "Città del Bio", "Forum Spumanti", "Nebbiolo World" and "Volcanic Wines" 43 Grand Gold Medals and 346 Gold Medals were awarded, as required by the OIV regulation (International Organization of Vine and Wine), which requires that only 30% of the wines in the competition can be awarded. For this reason, wines that have in any case obtained more than flattering results have been excluded from the "medal table".

«As regional coordinator, on behalf of the Sardinian coordination and of the national bodies of the Città del Vino Association , I send my best wishes to the owners and collaborators of the awarded companies, but also a heartfelt thanks to all the others who participated and who, still once, they brought the name of Sardinia to the top in the wine sector», comments Giovanni Antonio Sechi with satisfaction.
