The Ohio Masters 1000 continues to struggle with inclement weather. After the scorching heat of recent days, which had also tested Jannik Sinner, rain interrupted the program.
On centre court, the Italian number 1 in the ranking saw his match against Adrian Mannarino suspended with the score at 6-4 for him in the first set and 2-1 for the Frenchman in the second, with Sinner leading 40-30 in the fourth game.
The decisive break of the first set came in the third game, when Sinner held firm on his forehand diagonal, forcing Mannarino into four errors with that shot .
The Frenchman, ranked number 89 in the ATP rankings, kept the match alive with a powerful serve and several aces, also taking advantage of some inaccuracies from Sinner, who was less aggressive than usual. "Always stay on the ball," coach Simone Vagnozzi encouraged him from the stands.
In the second set, the Italian—who had warmed up by dribbling soccer before the match—was unable to establish his rhythm . The pouring rain forced everyone into the locker rooms, with postponements announced every half hour until the deluge effectively put the day on hold.
It wasn't the only match interrupted or postponed. Previously, Alexander Zverev (no. 3) reached the round of 16 by defeating American Brandon Nakashima (no. 27) 6-4, 6-4, and now he'll face Russian Karen Khachanov. Holger Rune advances to the quarterfinals after Frances Tiafoe retired due to injury in the second set, a match the Dane was leading 6-4, 1-0.
In the women's draw, Wimbledon champion Iga Swiatek reached the quarterfinals by eliminating Sorana Cirstea 6-4, 6-3. In a surprise move, Magda Linette (no. 40) ousted last year's finalist Jessica Pegula (no. 4) in a two-day match that ended 6-4 in the third set.
