"Mom is gone ": is the terse message with which Cher announced on Twitter the death, at 96, of her mother Georgia Holt, actress, singer, songwriter and model.

The elderly woman had fallen ill with pneumonia last September and the star, responding to a fan who asked about her health, had confessed: "She has moments of ups and downs".

Georgia Holt is known for appearing on such programs as 'The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet', 'I Love Lucy' and 'Jane Wyman Presents the Fireside Theater' with Ronald Reagan's first wife. She had also appeared in various films including 'A Life of Her Own', 'Watch the Birdie', 'Grounds for Marriage' and 'Father's Little Dividend' . In the 80s he had recorded a country album, "Honky Tonk Woman" , only released in 2013 with a duet with Cher entitled "I'm Just Your Yesterday".

The same year she had been the focus of a documentary: " Dear Mom, Love Cher ". And the following year, in 2014, he had participated as a judge together with his nephew Chaz Bono, himself a trans, in an episode of the trans reality show " Drag Race " by RuPaul.

Born in Arkansas to a mother of just 13, Holt has been married and divorced six times . Since 1976, she lived with partner Craig Spencer.
