A few days before Christmas, the Organic Agnello di Sardegna PGI arrives on the tables. The Island is one of the regions with the largest organic surface area (222 thousand hectares according to Sardegna Agricoltura in 2023 with 61 thousand hectares dedicated to grazing). There are 731 companies dedicated to sheep breeding and approximately 70 thousand heads raised.

"This is a historic achievement for our sector," comments Battista Cualbu, president of the Consortium for the Protection of the Agnello di Sardegna Contas, "the IGP certification and the organic farming method represent a further official recognition of the quality and excellence of our sheep meat."

"We have worked for a long time to achieve this goal", adds Andrea Campurra, president of the Sardinia Bio District, "now we can offer the market a product that not only satisfies the needs of the most attentive consumers, but also promotes animal welfare and environmental sustainability".

The beginning of a promotional plan path financed by Regional Law no. 17 of 19 December 2023, explains the director of the Bio District Aldo Buiani, «is a fundamental tool that will finally allow us to start numerous rural districts in Sardinia. In the coming months we will be involved in numerous promotional initiatives at regional and national level with the aim of promoting organic production and ensuring a prosperous and sustainable future for the entire Sardinian agri-food sector». It is now considered fundamental to continue on the path of protecting and promoting Sardinian meat. «We immediately joined the Sardinia Bio District because we are convinced that organic production will be an added value to a product that consumers already recognize as excellent. This allows us to enter a completely new market for our lamb», comments Alessandro Mazzette, director of Contas, «this significant step forward could open up new opportunities for the entire supply chain, promoting a sustainable development model and further promoting local resources».
