In-depth Pathologies:

Myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism are all vision disorders that can cause difficulty focusing the image on the retina of the eye.

Myopia is a disorder in which the eye is too long for its refractive power, meaning that light focuses in front of the retina rather than on it. This makes it difficult to see distant objects clearly, but near vision is generally clear.

Hyperopia, in contrast, is a disorder in which the eye is too short for its refractive power, meaning light focuses behind the retina rather than on it. This makes it difficult to see nearby objects clearly, but distance vision can be relatively clear.

Astigmatism is another condition in which the shape of the cornea or lens of the eye is irregular, making it difficult to focus light on a single precise point on the retina. This can cause blurry or distorted vision both near and far.

In all three cases, glasses or contact lenses can usually be used to correct vision, improving the quality of vision and reducing eye strain and headaches. But for many years now, this slavery to glasses and contact lenses has been overshadowed by the possibility of completely correcting vision by resorting to refractive surgery. Above all, LASIK surgery has become the most widespread in the world for the correction of these vision defects, already giving freedom to millions of people who have undergone this procedure.

The LASIK technique:

The LASIK (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis) technique is a vision correction procedure that can be used to treat myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism. This technique is performed using an excimer laser to reshape the shape of the cornea, which is the first transparent surface of the eye that helps focus light onto the retina.

Before surgery, the patient undergoes a series of complete eye exams, which are quick and non-invasive, to assess his suitability for the procedure. This series of tests includes a measurement of the curvature of the cornea, a corneal topography, Tomography with Pentacam and with the MS39 (laser tomograph), the depth of the anterior chamber of the eye and the diameter of the pupil in various light conditions (low , medium, high brightness), OCT examination of the macula and optic nerve, measurement of intraocular pressure and corneal thickness, control of the central and peripheral retina, evaluation of lacrimation. All these tests are usually performed in a short time without invasive procedures and constitute a careful and timely assessment of general ocular health, allowing a very precise judgment to be expressed on the possibility of undergoing Lasik surgery for the correction of existing refractive defects.

It should be specified that today, it is possible to correct a very wide variety of refractive defects, albeit with different techniques. Therefore, in the event that, for example, the amount of myopia is too high for the LASIK technique, it will be possible to evaluate an alternative technique, which does not thin the cornea and which, through the implantation of intraocular lenses (ICL) allows to correct up to to 18 diopters of myopia associated with astigmatism of up to 7 diopters.

During the LASIK procedure, a microkeratome is used to create a thin flap on the surface of the cornea, or this flap can be created using another laser: the FEMTOLASER. This flap is gently folded to expose the underlying corneal tissue. Next, the excimer laser is used to reshape the cornea, eliminating minute amounts (MICRONS = THOUSANDTHS OF A MILLIMETER) of tissue to correct the irregular curvature of the eye.

After finishing the laser treatment, the corneal flap is carefully repositioned onto the surface of the eye. The flap will naturally adhere to the underlying tissue and heal quickly.

The only sensation may be that of a slight sensation of pressure during the LASIK procedure, which is generally well tolerated. The procedure takes only a few minutes for each eye and the patient can go home the same day, without any bandage.

LASIK vision correction is a safe and effective procedure that gives remarkable results for the correction of myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism.

Obviously, as with any medical procedure, pre-operative conditions must be considered, as will result from the assessments of the preliminary examinations. It will be important to be able to discuss every detail with the patient before proceeding with the operation. Our doctors and in particular the surgeon will be happy to give all the details on the patient's situation and the LASIK procedure.

LASIK interventions have been performed at the Vista Center for over thirty years now, we were the first in Sardinia to adopt this technique. There are thousands of cases treated and they are increasing year after year.
