The battle for the valorisation of casu marzu , one of the most famous and controversial specialties of Sardinian food and wine, has started again.

Lega deputy Dario Giagoni announced that he had deposited a question with the Minister of Agriculture and at the same time launched an appeal to the EU so that the casu marzu, considering the recent go-ahead to insect-based foods given by Brussels, get out of the 'lawlessness .

«Casu marzu - writes Giagoni - a typical Sardinian cheese with worms whose origin according to some historians dates back to when the island was a province of the Roman Empire, is a food that has been banned by the European Union, both in production and in marketing. Anyone who violates risks fines of up to 50 thousand euros, even if the danger to health has never been unequivocally certified. A ban that could have appeared lawful when assumed, but which today clashes with the opening of the EU to the marketing of products derived from insects. The casu marzu is an element of the culinary tradition of our land: for this reason we have filed a question asking the ministry if and what initiatives it wants to undertake also at a European level to allow the production and marketing of this typical product, also using criteria and standards more modern".
