Giuseppe Garibaldi's private life, his habits, the objects, and even the scents that accompanied his daily life, are the subject of a theatrical performance. Today, Saturday, October 31st, at 3:00 PM, and tomorrow, Sunday, November 1st, at 10:30 AM and 3:00 PM, the Casa Bianca di Caprera will host "Garibaldi Intimo," an olfactory theater performance that reconstructs the daily life of the Hero of Two Worlds through a sensory journey. This initiative is part of the eighth edition of the international festival Be in the Move, whose autumn section runs until November 7th between the islands of Maddalena and Caprera.
The show takes place in the house where Garibaldi spent nearly thirty years, dying in 1882. This year marks the 170th anniversary of the building's construction, constructed of granite and plaster in a South American-inspired style. Leading the audience, both adults and children, will be the Genti Arrubia Teatro, Mangano-Massip, and the French company Le Tyr et la Lire, in collaboration with the Compendio Garibaldino.
The event "recalls the Hero of Two Worlds with a show full of magic, tenderness, and fantasy, engaging all the spectators' senses," the organizers explain. "The aromas of food, cultivated plants, the scents of objects brought by Garibaldi's soldiers and visitors from around the world, the scents of events large and small, joyful and dramatic, from the hero's daily life, including those of the medicines that accompanied his final days, will intertwine in an immersive sensory journey through history, dance, mime, and poetry." The idea behind "Garibaldi Intimo" is "to remind us that history is also made up of everyday gestures and that a hero's greatness is rooted in his profound humanity."
The program also includes artistic research workshops aimed at schools and the local community. The work will culminate in a collective performance scheduled for November 7th at the La Maddalena Civic Market. The festival is promoted by the Giuseppe Garibaldi Memorial Foundation, with the support of various organizations and institutions.
