Capital of Culture 2024, La Maddalena presents the candidacy
The 10 finalist projects will be chosen by 18 January, and the most suitable candidature will be communicated to the minister by 15 March

There are 23 cities in the running for the title of Capital of Culture 2024. Application dossiers including title, cultural project, body responsible for the project, evaluation of economic and financial sustainability and objectives pursued have already been delivered.
Applications will be evaluated by a commission composed of 7 experts from the world of culture, arts, territorial development and tourism, which will be established shortly by decree of the Minister. By January 18, 2022, the commission will examine the applications and select the 10 finalist projects that will be invited to public hearings scheduled at the Ministry of Culture headquarters by March 1, 2022.
By 15 March 2022, the commission will therefore propose to the Minister of Culture the candidacy deemed most suitable to be awarded the title of Italian Capital of Culture for the year 2024.
Among the 23 candidate cities running for Sardinia there is also La Maddalena. The others are: Ala (Trento), Aliano (Matera), Ascoli Piceno, Asolo (Treviso), Burgio (Agrigento), Capistrano (Vibo Valentia), Chioggia (Venice), Conversano with the metropolitan area of Bari (Bari), Diamante (Cosenza), Gioia dei Marsi (L'Aquila), Grosseto, Mesagne (Brindisi), Pesaro (Pesaro and Urbino), Pordenone, Saluzzo with the Terre del Monviso (Cuneo), Sestri Levante with the Tigullio (Genoa), Syracuse , Union of Mountain Municipalities Amiata Grossetana (Grosseto), Union of Municipalities Paestum-Alto Cilento (Salerno), Viareggio (Lucca), Vicenza, Vinci (Florence).
The title of Italian Capital of Culture is awarded for a period of one year and the winning city will receive one million euros.
In previous years the title has already gone to Sardinia with the city of Cagliari, winner in 2015 together with Lecce, Perugia, Ravenna and Siena. Other cities awarded the prestigious award were Mantua in 2016, Pistoia in 2017, Palermo in 2018, Parma in 2020 which was extended to 2021 by the Relaunch Decree. The same decree proclaimed, as a sign of solidarity for the victims of the pandemic, Bergamo and Brescia as Italian Capitals of Culture for 2023. In 2022 the capital will be Procida.
