Debut at the 78th edition of the Cannes Film Festival of the only Italian film competing in the official competition, Fuori by Mario Martone, with Valeria Golino, Matilda De Angelis, Elodie and Corrado Fortuna, which will have its premiere on May 20 at 10 pm in the Grand Theatre Lumiere. A debut that marks the return to competition on the Croisette of the Neapolitan director three years after Nostalgia, and kicks off the film's theatrical run. In view of the release scheduled for May 22 with 01 Distribution, on May 21, from 8:45 pm there will be a series of previews in selected cinemas throughout Italy, connected via streaming, with the Cinema Teatro Ariston in Sanremo, where Martone, Valeria Golino, Matilda De Angelis, Elodie and the author of the story and co-screenwriter Ippolita di Majo will be in the hall, who will greet the spectators before the screening and at the end will participate in a meeting moderated by Piera Detassis.
Fuori (Italian-French co-production Indigo film with Rai Cinema and The Apartment) is an immersion in a fundamental experience in the life of the writer Goliarda Sapienza (Golino, already director of The Art of Joy, the series that won three David di Donatello awards this year, based on the masterpiece novel by the Sicilian author), that of her detention in 1980, for having stolen and pawned a friend's jewelry. A period that triggers in Goliarda Sapienza, thanks also to the meeting and friendship with some young inmates, a rebirth, also artistic. Themes perfectly enhanced by an edition of Cannes that presents seven works by female filmmakers (Julia Ducournau, Lynne Ramsey, Hafsia Herzi, Hayakawa Chie, Mascha Schilinski, Kelly Reichardt, Carla Simon) in the running for the Palme d'Or out of 22 titles, and which also features female protagonists in films by Sebastian Lelio (La Ola), the Dardenne brothers (Jeunes Meres), Joachim Trier (Valeur sentimentale), Dominik Moll (Affair 137) and Saeed Roustaee (Woman and Child).
Eyes are also on Martone's film for other important aspects, such as the fundamental role of France in making known the symbolic novel by Goliarda Sapienza (1924-1996), The Art of Joy: published in Italy in 1994 (the first part) and in its entirety, posthumously in 1998, in just a thousand copies by Stampa Alternativa (22 years after it was written), it became an international success thanks to the complete edition published in 2005 across the Alps (where it has sold over 500 thousand copies over the years).
The two protagonists, known worldwide, are also highly anticipated: Valeria Golino, a star in France as well as in Italy, also for her works as a director (all presented at Cannes, including the series from The Art of Joy last year) and very popular also in the USA (from Rain man to the series The Morning show) and Matilda De Angelis who has also established herself abroad with series such as The Undoing with Nicole Kidman, La legge di Lidia Poet on Netflix and Citadel: Diana with the executive production of Anthony and Joe Russo, on Prime Video. An openness to the world reflected by the international press, with among others Hollywood Reporter who included Mario Martone with Fuori in the list of authors at Cannes, to keep an eye on as possible international contenders also for the Oscars and Variety who interviewed the director before the festival also publishing an exclusive clip of the film. In the meantime, negotiations are in full swing (with agreements already concluded) for international sales handled by Goodfellas. Distribution in France has already been assured by co-producer Le Pacte.
