Cannes Film Festival, the new rules on clothes: no nudity and no bulky trains
But there are also openings: heels, which were previously a must, can leave room for elegant but low shoesThe new rules in Cannes also involve changes to the program, as admitted by Hollywood actress Halle Berry, a member of the jury chaired by Juliette Binoche who will award the Palme d'Or on Saturday, May 24. For the gala screenings that take place around 7:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m., in which the artistic teams participate, evening dress is required (long dress, tuxedo). Alternatively, it is also possible to wear a "little black dress", a cocktail dress, a dark trouser suit, an elegant top with black trousers. Elegant shoes and sandals with or without heels (big news, high heels were previously a must), absolutely no sneakers, even dark ones.
Black or navy suits are permitted for men, but a bow tie is mandatory. Tote bags, backpacks or large bags are prohibited during gala screenings. For reasons of decency, nudity is prohibited on the red carpet, as well as in any other area of the Festival. Voluminous clothing, especially those with a long train, is not permitted, as it hinders the proper flow of guests and complicates the seating arrangement in the room.
Will the new rules be respected? It is worth wondering, given that in the past, the more daring and voluminous the dresses were, the more they stood out, even for models who were testimonials for fashion brands. Halle Berry admitted that she could not wear the dress she had chosen for the opening night of the Cannes Film Festival last night because of the new dress code : it would probably violate the new rules that prohibit nudity on the red carpet and excessively large dresses.
“I had this amazing dress to wear by Gupta, and I can’t wear it because the train is too big,” the Oscar winner told reporters, referring to Indian designer Gaurav Gupta, who has previously dressed rapper Cardi B and created statement gowns for the Met Gala. “Of course, I’m going to play by the rules,” Berry said. “So I had to change course.” But the star supported festival organizers in limiting excessively risqué outfits with new written rules: “It’s a good rule.”
We're starting from scratch because in the annals of Cannes there are many nude looks on the red carpet, like the Schiaparelli sculpture dress worn in 2021 by Bella Hadid.
