After weeks of discussions, the leaders of the Democratic Party, the Five Star Movement, and the Alliance of the Greens and the Left have established an initial roadmap, with three main steps: the development of a common programmatic platform, a national mobilization in December, and the selection of the candidate to lead the coalition through primaries, to be held by February.
The Campo largo agreement came at the end of a videoconference meeting that lasted approximately three hours, attended by Democratic Party secretary Elly Schlein, M5S president Giuseppe Conte, and AVS representatives Angelo Bonelli and Nicola Fratoianni: "Next week, discussions will begin to define the coalition's program by November. The opposition forces represented in Parliament, who share the urgency of building a government alternative to the right, will participate in the discussions. Finally, we agreed that the primaries will be held by February, with the goal of making them an important opportunity for democratic participation, so as to ensure a leadership fully supported by every progressive force."
The intention is to also involve other opposition forces in Parliament and willing to work towards building an alternative to the current majority. Among the parties expected to be included at the table are Italia Viva, Più Europa, Progetto Civico, and Rifondazione Comunista.
Another event is planned for December, when the center-left intends to hold a national demonstration open to social organizations and civil society. The initiative will take place during the parliamentary debate on the budget law and will serve to highlight the opposition's criticisms of the economic policies of Giorgia Meloni's government. The most delicate step, however, remains leadership. Schlein and Conte have agreed to hold primaries by February, with the aim of identifying the coalition's leader through an open consultation. Organizational issues and the competition rules remain to be addressed, as well as the potential candidate pool. The choice must be made following the political and programmatic debate, so as to present voters with a coalition with a common proposal and a leadership recognized by the various components.
