Calabria regional elections: center-right governor Roberto Occhiuto, running for re-election, leads center-left opponent Pasquale Tridico by about 20 points, and the center-right, with the vote count still underway, is celebrating his re-election.

"In Calabria, too, voters have placed their trust in the center-right coalition, confirming Roberto Occhiuto as President of the Region," Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni wrote on social media. She added: "This is an important result, acknowledging the good governance we will continue to pursue for the well-being of the region and its citizens. Congratulations to Roberto, and I wish him all the best in his new role."

The turnout was low: only 43% of eligible voters went to the polls.

"In a civilized country," Occhiuto commented, "no one resigns because of a notice of investigation. Every part of the state, every power, must do its job, but too often judicial investigations are exploited to defeat those who would otherwise have been defeated. We prevented this," he added. "I am proud of the Calabrians who have shown great maturity and demonstrated that commitment and sacrifice can be rewarded."
