A university student name different from the registered name to eliminate the risk of "discrimination" related to gender identity.
It is the new possibility offered by the University of Cagliari , which has issued the new "Regulations for the activation and management of alias careers" , which aims to guarantee equal opportunities and well-being at work.
"It will be a deterrent to possible abandonments of a university career which may have occurred in the past due to a lack of recognition of the identity and dignity of individuals ", underlines the board of the Unica LGBT student association.
An "important achievement" because, explains Ester Cois , the rector's delegate for Gender Equality, "the awareness of one's crucial responsibility with respect to the issue of guaranteeing the personal rights of all has led Unica to be one of the first Italian universities , already in 2018, to equip itself with this fundamental tool in terms of inclusive policies, originally intended only for the student population. The close collaboration between the Single Guarantee Committee and the Student Services Coordination sector has marked an intense process of developing proposals for amendments to the current Regulation, in line with the guidelines released by the national conference of equality bodies Italian universities".
The path that led to the regulation lasted three years: «The need to stir the waters, debate and defend this battle as students required a non-negligible commitment on the part of individuals», continues Unica Lgbt. «First with the approval and then the inclusion of the change, we can say with enthusiasm that Unica has made truly significant steps towards inclusion and gender equality , our cornerstones since always, and for which we can only express extreme happiness and relief."
The activation of the alias career can now be requested by any person belonging in any capacity to the academic community of the University of Cagliari who wishes to use a name other than the registered name.
