The call for tenders for the construction of the new commercial port in Cagliari has been published.

An infrastructure worth 298 million euros (out of an economic intervention framework of almost 345 million, of which 99.35 million financed with PNRR funds, and works that will affect the next 5 years), which includes six berths for ships of generation, a total of 43 hectares of yards, over 2,500 stalls for parking semi-trailers and a maritime station on two levels of around 3,000 square metres.

The project represents the largest tender to date published by the Sardinian Sea Port System Authority.

In detail, the work includes 6 moorings: one 271 meters long with a mooring tooth obtained by resectioning part of the embankment overlooking the access channel to the container and bulk terminal. Three, 250 meters long, will be positioned parallel to the western guardian pier, while the other two aft approach teeth will be housed at the ends of the new shore descent, thanks to the positioning of a metal walkway on mooring posts.

« The entire basin - explains the Port System Authority of the Sardinian Sea -, to ensure full operation, will be deepened to a depth of 11 metres. The excavated material (approximately 1.75 million cubic meters) will be used both for the construction of the operational yards and for depositing in the already existing reclaimed reservoirs on the west bank. The compendium, equipped with a perimeter fence and security gates, will be divided into 5 squares which will host around 2,500 stalls for parking semi-trailers, including 52 for parking dangerous goods. Access to the new Terminal is provided directly from the existing junction between the old and the new state road 195, until the completion of the internal port road network (already in the planning stage and financed with 10 million euro of PNRR funds) which will allow the entrance also from the junction existing at the evolution basin" .

An important action to mitigate the environmental impact is also planned through the laying of rows of trees to shield the squares, and with the replanting of a large number of specimens of the native essences already present in the outer port (limonium, tamarisk, mastic and wild olive trees) . The design of the greenery will affect the internal part of the port area, in particular in correspondence with the car parks of the maritime station, which will be equipped with shelters with photovoltaic panels and 12 charging stations for electric cars.

Finally, the new passenger terminal will be the reference point of the port cluster and will be structured on two levels. On the ground floor (about 1800 square meters) a public area with a waiting room, customs and security checks, services, and a reserved area for ticket offices, law enforcement offices, maritime health offices and first aid clinic.

On the upper floor (approximately 1200 m2) the AdSP offices and a restaurant business with a panoramic terrace which will be accessible, even directly from the embarkation lanes, to passengers with cars.

Next to the maritime station, the project in the tender includes two other buildings for the customs gates, with a control area and operators' offices.

The deadline for submitting offers for the construction of the work is set for 12 noon on 19 June. The award, as per the notice, will take place on the basis of the criterion of the most economically advantageous offer with particular rewards for the reduction of construction times.

"The contract published this morning is the largest, both in terms of economic value and commitment of the structure, so far banned by the AdSP and has as its object the construction, from scratch, of a port call with related services - says Massimo Deiana, president of the AdSP of the Sardinian Sea – We are therefore entering the second phase of the complex reconversion project of the historic port and the gradual transfer of all commercial traffic, in particular the growing one of heavy vehicles, in a more suitable, infrastructured area according to the most modern canons expected by the shipping market and, not a secondary aspect, better connected with the regional roads and the island's productive realities. This is a work which candidates the Canal Port to become one of the best performing multipurpose hubs in the Mediterranean for all sea activities: shipbuilding, passenger cabotage, semi-trailer traffic, bulk cargo and, while waiting to positively resolve the mother of all battles, container terminals».
