On the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II in Europe, the exhibition "Choosing the Homeland. Valorous Soldiers in the War of Liberation. Sardinian-Corsican Operational Context. 1943–1945" will be inaugurated on Friday, December 12, 2025, at the Sardinian Army Military Command (Palazzo de La Vallée, Via Torino 21), Cagliari.

The event will take place from 10.30 am to 1.00 pm today, from 15 to 18 December from 9.00 am to 12.00 pm and from 2.30 pm to 4.30 pm (reservation required), in conjunction with the presentation of the CalendEsercito 2026, with free access.

A journey to remember Sardinia's contribution to the Liberation

The exhibition offers a detailed historical excursus dedicated to the role of Sardinia and Sardinian fighters in the War of Liberation, with particular attention to the Sardinian-Corsican theatre of operations and their contribution to the defense of democratic institutions.

Period newspapers, documents, and unpublished testimonies will be on display, as well as precious historical artifacts.

Among the most notable pieces are:

• The uniform of Colonel Giovanni Biddau (Ploaghe), Silver Medal for Military Valor in Memory, who with the 152nd Regiment of the “Sassari” Division resisted the Germans during the days of the Armistice, until his deportation and death in the Flossembürg concentration camp in 1945.

• The uniform of Air Squad General Aldo Remondino, twice awarded the Silver Medal for Military Valor, commander of the 51st Fighter Wing, protagonist in the defense of the Sardinian skies during the Allied offensive of 1943.

Reconstructive archaeology and dioramas

The section dedicated to scale dioramas, created according to the most up-to-date interactive museography criteria, will offer the public immersive reconstructions curated by Cagliari artists and model makers Enzo Puddu, Giacomo Sanna, and Pietro Cuccureddu.

Among the most suggestive works:

• The large-scale reconstruction of the clash on the Mannu Bridge in Oristano on 9 September 1943 between Germans and Italians.

• The 1/200 scale model of the battleship “Roma”, sunk by the Germans off Asinara on the same day.

The documentary film

During the opening days, the film "Sardinia and Corsica: Islands of Fire. The War on the Mediterranean Chessboard in 1943" will also be screened. The film, made with previously unseen footage from international archives, including the Bundesarchiv Militärarchiv, the Imperial War Museum, and the National Archives, features previously unseen footage. The historical research and texts are by Alberto Monteverde, while Corrado Monteverde is responsible for the digital restoration and direction.
