Cagliari continues to seek to establish itself as the cultural capital of the Mediterranean with the second edition of the Mediterranea Publishing Fellowship, scheduled for today until September 4th, and presented this morning at the Palazzo Regio. Not a fair or a festival, but a laboratory of understanding, as project director Alessi Schreiber explained: "The Mediterranean is complex, made up of influences and traditions. Every editorial choice is an act of responsibility, because it involves relationships, innovation, and memory. The Fellowship aims to transform Cagliari into a laboratory of understanding."
The program, Schreiber emphasized, unfolds over three days, progressing "from the general to the specific, and then arriving at the tools." The first day is dedicated to general Mediterranean dynamics through academic keynotes and cultural analyses. The second day delves into the focus country—this year, Malta—as a specific case study, with a delegation led by the Maltese National Book Council. The third day transforms the acquired cultural understanding into operational tools for publishers, with sessions on creative processes, curatorial innovation, and practical methodologies.
Mark Camilleri, representing NBC Malta, reiterated the importance of events like this in building bridges between cultures. "Malta is a small island, with its own language and a strong identity that, to be shared, must necessarily be translated."
Ten publishers from Canada, Greece, Armenia, Switzerland, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Uruguay, the United Kingdom, Italy, and Spain, along with a Maltese delegation, are participating in a busy schedule of meetings between the Mediterranean Media Library and the Exma center. Guests include prestigious names such as Carol Reyes (Grupo Planeta, Mexico), Chiara Gardella (Hanser Verlag, Germany), Laura Gomez (Penguin Random House, Colombia), and Mario Capello (Einaudi Stile Libero, Italy) . Representing Sardinia, the publishing company Ischìre is responsible for project execution, coordinated by one of the founders, author Ciro Auriemma.
The Fellowship, developed with the University of Cagliari and supported by the Municipality and Metropolitan City, thus confirms the capital's international vocation. It's not just industrial relations, but a network uniting academia, professionals, and institutions , with the Mediterranean at its core and Cagliari playing a key role.
