First, a three-year prison sentence for defrauding a person of unfitness, then another two years and three months for sexual assault, but with the offense being classified as less serious. Walter Montis, 48, known in the city for running a cooperative that provided ambulances for the elderly and infirm, was handed down two convictions in the space of a few minutes yesterday morning, following two hearings before the First Criminal Section of the Court. These are first-instance judgments, to be clear, and therefore not final.
In the first case, Montis was charged with extortion against an elderly woman (born in 1937), from whom he allegedly stole €244,590 between 2017 and 2019, as well as furniture and other appliances worth an additional €4,500. The second trial, before the same judges, concerned alleged harassment Montis committed in 2018 against a young volunteer at the cooperative. An appeal against both sentences has already been announced.
