Inflation continues to erode the incomes of the people of Cagliari. According to Istat data released by the Municipality, in October there was a variation in prices of +1.3% compared to the same month in 2023. In September the trend index, year on year, was instead at +1.1%.

In October, there was a slight decrease in prices (-0.2%) compared to September 2024, when, however, a decrease of 0.5% was recorded compared to the previous month.

Large increases are recorded on basic necessities such as food products and soft drinks, on education and on hospitality and catering services. Increases that, according to the National Consumers Union, translate into 270 euros of additional expenditure per year for an average family. But let's see in detail, sector by sector, the price trend in the Sardinian capital.

Food and non-alcoholic beverages

Year-on-year, there was a 2% increase in prices, and 1.2% compared to September 2024. The most significant increases were reported in the classes “Vegetables” (+5.7% compared to October 2023), “Fruit” (+5.6%) and “Coffee, tea and cocoa” (+1.5%). However, there were no significant variations with the minus sign.

Alcoholic beverages and tobacco

Prices virtually unchanged compared to September 2024 (+0.1%), increased by 3% compared to October 2023. The price of beer increased by 1.8% on an annual basis.

Clothing and footwear

More comforting data come from this sector, where prices decreased by 0.4% on an annual basis, by 0.5% compared to September 2024. In the “shoes and other footwear” class in particular, a decrease of 3.9% on an annual basis was recorded.

Housing, water, electricity and fuels

Here prices are still rising, but inflation is falling. On an annual basis it is +0.4%, while in September it was +0.9%.

Furniture, household goods and services

Prices unchanged compared to October 2023, down 0.6% compared to the previous month. But “Home cleaning and maintenance services” and “Home appliance repairs” increased (+1.2%).

Health services and health expenses

On an annual basis, costs increased by 0.9%, on a monthly basis almost unchanged (-0.1%).

Transport

In the transport sector, a sharp decline is recorded on an annual basis, -2.3%. On a monthly basis, the variation is -0.2%. In air transport, a decline of 3.5% is recorded on an annual basis, in maritime transport a sharp increase, +10.1%.

Communications

Prices down 1.8% year-on-year, down 0.2% from September 2023.

Recreation, entertainment and culture

Prices up on an annual basis (+1.3%) but inflation slightly down (in September it was +1.4%). Looking at the individual items and the variations on an annual basis: the prices of “Photographic and cinematographic equipment and optical instruments” (+4.6%) and books (+1.3%) are increasing, while those of “Recreational and sports services” (-6.7%) and “Sports, camping and outdoor recreational goods” (-5%) are decreasing.

Instruction

Education costs are growing, and not by a little: +4.7% on an annual basis, +3.1% on a monthly basis. University education costs, in particular, have increased by 5.9% in one year.

Hospitality and catering services

On an annual basis, prices increased by 4.5%, compared to a decrease of 1.8% last month.

Other goods and services

Here too, there is a price variation with a plus sign: increases of 4.4% on an annual basis, of 0.9% on a monthly basis. In the “Jewelry and watches” sector, prices increased by 9.6% in a year.
