Cagliari is officially among the candidates for the European Green Capital 2024 . It competes with seven European cities : Florence and Prato for Italy, Kosice for Slovakia, Krakow for Poland, Murcia and Valencia for Spain, Sofia for Bulgaria.

For Cagliari this is the third participation after those of the 2021 and 2023 editions.

"From the reading of the competing cities - explains the mayor Paolo Truzzu - we can see the net increase in candidacies from central-southern Europe, regions previously unfortunate in the final victory: this is a sign of a changed and increased sensitivity on the part of the Mediterranean populations. towards the issues of urban sustainability, originally from North Europe ". Cagliari tries to play his cards.

"In recent years - continues the mayor - the Municipality's path has been set on accelerating towards a green transition to recover the much and too much time previously lost: the interventions financed by React-Eu and from the Pnrr, which will see full implementation in the coming months and years. We look forward to hearing the outcome of the evaluation by the European judges, confident in the recognition of the progress made by our city on various environmental issues and aware of having to continue briskly on other issues that see us historically more deficient ".

The deputy mayor and planning councilor, Giorgio Angius , adds: "The acceptance of the candidacy represents the overcoming of the first phase, the purely technical one: in the coming months the dossier will be evaluated by a group of experts, who will decide whether Cagliari for the first time may be included in the list of finalists ".
