Perhaps she doesn't know she's made history. The first car to enter the fully open Via Roma was driven by a woman who, at 3:48 PM, in a white Volkswagen, arriving from Palazzo Bacaredda, found the road clear, without barriers or prohibition signs, all the way to Piazza Deffenu.

Thus, after 2 years and four months of closure for redevelopment work , one of the city's most important arteries and the square have been returned to the city.

Once the work was completed, workers from the company that won the tender to build architect Stefano Boeri's project had been busy for several days dismantling the construction site's barriers, safety nets, and New Jersey barriers.

Around 1:00 PM, the final finishing touches were made, and then , finally, the road reopened to traffic in both directions. With 12 minutes to 4:00 PM, Daniele Olla, the person in charge of the process, gave the green light to local police officers and city officials for the long-awaited, definitive opening to cars.

Therefore, starting yesterday, long and winding detours to cut the city in two are no longer necessary: those arriving from Viale Diaz and Viale Regina Margherita and from Largo and Via Roma will no longer be forced to enter the busy and bumpy New York 11 Settembre waterfront.
