“Memory is the only vaccine against indifference,” says Liliana Segre. And having memory is a civic duty as well as a source of energy to better face the future. With this spirit, the fifth day of studies in memory of the partisan Nino Garau will take place on Monday, December 16 in Cagliari, at 5 p.m., at the “Enrico Berlinguer” Foundation in via Emilia.
For the occasion, the book edited by Chiara Colombini and Carlo Greppi, International History of the Italian Resistance (Laterza, 2024) will be presented as part of a training course for teachers.
The works will be introduced by Dino Garau, son of the partisan Nino, and Walter Falgio, president of Issasco. The book's editor, Carlo Greppi, will then speak, as will Valeria Deplano and Matteo Petracci, authors of the chapter on the participation in the Resistance of the populations of the Italian colonial dominions. The evening will be coordinated by the professor Lorella Villa.
The fighters
The volume addresses the theme of the cosmopolitanism of the partisan war in Italy where anti-fascists fought - it is estimated no less than 15-20 thousand - coming from many European and non-European countries. In addition to the essay by Deplano and Petracci, the volume includes contributions by Enrico Acciai, Eric Gobetti, Isabella Insolvibile, Mirco Carrattieri, Laura Bordoni, Liliana Picciotto, Luca Bravi. The event is promoted by Issasco, in collaboration with the National Institute "Ferruccio Parri", Anpi, Anppia, Uaps, Cidi and the "Enrico Berlinguer" Foundation.
The biography
The life of the young man from Cagliari, Nino Garau, changes radically after September 8, 1943, a turning point in Italian history. He is an officer cadet at the Air Force Academy in Caserta (which he entered at the age of 17). After the commanders escape, he leaves the military school and puts on another uniform. He goes up Italy, reaches the Modena area, which becomes the place of his Resistance. He is captured by the Germans, suffers violence and torture. He manages to escape from the prison in Verona. He rejoins his Brigade ("Aldo Casalgrandi") to participate in the liberation of Spilamberto and other centers of Emilia. Until his death in 2020, he was a witness to democratic ideals. In the book "La Resistenza di Geppe, diary of a young Sardinian who chose to fight for freedom and democracy", edited by Walter Falgio, there are his life and the values that he defended with all his strength.
