The “vehicle fleet” circulating in Sardinia is not only old, but continues to age year after year.

This is the result of an analysis conducted by Facile.it , according to which the average age of cars travelling on the island's roads reached 13 years and 1 month in September 2024 , a whopping 2.6% more than a year earlier. Numbers that make Sardinia the fifth region in Italy for vehicle age , well above the national average, where overall the average age is "just" 11 years and 8 months .

Provincial data – Analyzing the data at provincial level, it emerges that, in Sardinia, the “oldest” cars circulate in Nuoro, where in September 2024 the average age was 14 years and 7 months . In second place is the province of Oristano (13 years and 6 months) .

Continuing down the ranking, we find Sassari, with an average age of 13 years and 4 months; Cagliari, on the other hand, turned out to be the area of Sardinia where the “youngest” cars circulate; here the cars are, on average, 12 years and 4 months old.

Looking at how the average age of Sardinian vehicles has changed over the last year, it emerges that the values have increased in all the provinces of the region, with variations ranging from +1.3% in Cagliari to +4.4% in Sassari. The only exception is Nuoro, where the age has remained stable compared to 2023.

Car Insurance – Does the age of a vehicle, in addition to being a probable cause of lower safety for passengers and worse environmental sustainability , affect the premium paid for car insurance? The answer is yes. Facile.it has taken into consideration the profile of an insured person and calculated – all other things being equal – how much the average premium paid varies with the age of the vehicle.

With an average age of 10 years, the rate to be paid for the car insurance is about 206 euros, a figure that increases to 228 euros if the vehicle is 12 years old and reaches 284 euros if it is 14 years old. A difference of 38% in four years.
