A "major power outage" has hit the French Riviera, the department's prefect confirmed, explaining that 160,000 homes were affected and left without electricity.

Even Cannes, where the last day of the 78th edition of the Film Festival is underway, remains in the dark. The closing ceremony, organizers assure, is confirmed.

“The Palais des Festivals has switched to an independent power supply, which means that all events and screenings scheduled for today, including the closing ceremony, can continue under normal conditions,” read a statement from the festival organization.

The blackout was caused by a fire, probably of malicious origin, which occurred during the night in a high voltage cabin in Tanneron (Var).

There are also problems with telephone and internet networks, which work intermittently.
