Carlos Alcaraz is the first Australian Open finalist. The world No. 1 Spaniard defeated Alexander Zverev in the fifth set, 6-4, 7-6, 6-7, 6-7, 7-5, after being up two sets and then being overtaken by the German in a marathon five and a half hours.

During the match the Spaniard also suffered cramps and felt very unwell.

The match was interrupted for a few minutes (much to Zverev's disappointment) to allow medical staff to intervene, to whom Carlos explained that he had also vomited. Then the world number one—who seemed on the verge of retiring— recovered, returned to the court, and managed to snatch the victory from his opponent.

"You always have to believe in yourself . It was one of the toughest matches, I'd say the toughest. I put my heart into it. I knew I had to fight until the last ball , and I knew the cramps could go away," Alcaraz said after the match.
