Large firecrackers seized from a home, suspicious injuries, and a hospitalization just hours after the explosion: from these elements, the Carabinieri in Nuoro have pieced together the first piece of the investigation into the attack on the Sos Alinos ATM, which occurred on the night between January 31st and February 1st . On Friday , they led to the arrest of a young man from Orosei . Antonio Leoni, 21, was arrested. Preliminary investigating judge Mauro Pusceddu approved the precautionary measure of house arrest, requested by prosecutor Elena Tres.

Silent scene

The young man, represented by attorney Basilio Brodu, appeared in court in Nuoro yesterday for a validation hearing, but exercised his right to remain silent. Meanwhile, investigations are ongoing to identify his accomplices: investigators believe the attempted robbery was carried out by a gang. At the 21-year-old's home, a few hours after the incident, officers seized several firecrackers that may have been used to retrieve the gunpowder used to make the rudimentary device used to attempt to blow up the Banco di Sardegna ATM.

The story

The bomb at the Banco di Sardegna ATM in Sos Alinos exploded around 3:30 a.m. The attackers placed a homemade explosive device in front of the ATM, in the same building as the Sos Alinos pharmacy. The explosion tore off the ATM's casing and scattered shrapnel, but the internal safe remained intact. Traces of blood were found at the scene, supporting the theory that one of the perpetrators was injured. A Citroën Picasso, possibly used as a getaway vehicle, had been stolen in Orosei during the night and was recovered in Onifai. Less than two hours later, Antonio Leoni showed up at the San Francesco hospital in Nuoro with burns and serious facial injuries. He underwent surgery. The close proximity of the two incidents and the nature of the injuries raised suspicions. Investigators are launching investigations to determine whether there is a connection between the hospitalization and the attempted assault, cross-referencing forensic findings, blood traces, and surveillance camera footage. In the hours following the attack, they find large firecrackers in the young man's home.

After the suspicions arose and the man was registered as a suspect, the arrest was made.
