Matteo Berrettini has qualified for the quarterfinals of the Sardegna Open tennis tournament. This afternoon, he defeated Argentina's top seed Mariano Navone, the most recent winner of Challenger 175, in two sets (7-5, 6-3). Tomorrow, the Italian will face the winner of the Centre Court match between Hubert Hurkacz and Emilio Nava.
The first set was a close match, with a thrilling third-game break by the Italian, but Berrettini responded immediately with a counterbreak. The Roman then secured the decisive break at 7-5, avoiding a tie-break. The key moment in the second set came in the sixth game, with a break to love that put the Italian up 4-2. Berrettini then held serve until 6-4. "I played at a very high level," the Italian said, "and I felt the crowd's enthusiasm. Navone is a great player, and I'm very happy I played well."
Matteo Arnaldi also advances against Juan Manuel Cerundolo on Court 14 of TC Cagliari. Second seed Adrian Mannarino also misses out, losing in the third set to Dutchman Jasper De Jong (3-6, 6-3, 1-6). Third seed Nuno Borges made a winning debut against Cristian Garin, albeit with a hard-fought victory: 6-4, 3-6, 7-6.
