A less hectic life, the farewell to cycling to devote more time to the family.
These are the reasons why Fabio Aru at the age of 31 left racing for good: "I want a future that allows me to stay at home more time", he explained in Cagliari at a press conference held in the Giorgio Pisano de L 'room. Sardinian Union.
"I could not stay out for 200-230 days. Now I will evaluate some proposals that I will accept no earlier than 2022 - he explains -. But it will be a job that must keep me away from home for a maximum of 30 days".
The prospect is to expand the family as soon as possible: "In the future I see marriage, and a little sister or a little brother for our daughter".
No more races, but the passion for two wheels does not fade from one day to the next: “I like to play sports, yesterday I was out and about with my friends from Villacidro, at different times than when I was training for competitions. Now I move at unthinkable times, at 2pm or 6pm. I do something with it every day ”.
The past: “At a certain point I became a company, many commitments even outside of training and competitions. Over the years I have also needed collaborators paid by me. Someone disappointed me, I was hurt ”.
What cycling leaves behind: “It teaches you to never give up, many times over the years I wanted to do it but I didn't. I like to remember the last team (Qhubeka Assos, ed), it was the most beautiful. In other teams, perhaps it is inevitable, there are beautiful things, but also a bit of envy. Here I felt at home, if I hadn't stopped I would have continued with them ”.
With the retreat even more freedom at the table: "Since I was very young I have not been able to eat at Christmas and New Year like everyone else, now we ate a suckling pig with friends".
There is a bit of nostalgia for another cycling: "We talk too much about numbers - said Aru - related to power meters: a climb becomes a set of figures. I would say that at least before professionalism we can do without meters. of power because you risk not listening to yourself and losing certain sensations ".
