Debated inclusion, work, privacy and ethics: these are the topics covered in the two-day "Sui Generis - The Cagliari days of equal opportunities". The meeting at Sa Manifattura in Cagliari of the Orders of doctors, lawyers, psychologists and accountants has shown critical issues and gaps at the base of the gender gap: it takes 132 years to have men and women on an equal footing, an aspect highlighted in the speeches of approximately 70 speakers from research centers, universities, professional orders .
Among the topics “Ethical and inclusive artificial intelligence”, “Professional competence and AI”, but also “Professional training and AI” and “AI and professional ethics, the relationship with users”. «For ten years we have been building a comparison that highlights how much needs to be done on the issues of equality», says Anna Rita Ecca, councilor of the Cagliari Medical Association. «We must prevent AI from becoming an opportunity that generates inequality» . Rosanna Mura (Bar Association) adds: «The issues of equality must contaminate the artificial intelligence that learns from what we provide it. We cannot risk it copying existing discrimination». And this was one of the most debated concepts .
"Artificial intelligence is among us and its role in the professions will have an impact. In social innovations, the persistence of stereotypes must be avoided, to enhance opportunities with modern rules in a civil and democratic society", commented Angela Quaquero, president of the Regional Order of Psychologists. For Emilio Montaldo, re-elected to lead the Order of Physicians and Dentists of the province of Cagliari, a collective professional effort is also needed "in asserting one's strengths, enhancing skills and capacity for intervention. Unfortunately, even today women still have a bit more of a climb to make. The data? Useful for a more precise diagnosis".
Monica Toraldo di Francia, bioethicist and philosopher of science, has no doubts: «We look with confidence at the great opportunities. AI can discriminate against women, as such and if they are elderly, because they are absent . We are talking about an area of technologies in constant evolution, very difficult to regulate and privacy no longer exists. We are alert». Martina Olla, president of the Equal Opportunities Commission of lawyers, explains: «In our Order, AI, which in the processing of data will change our work, is not perceived very well». For female lawyers, Susanna Pisano cuts short: «We are working to ensure that artificial intelligence does not go from being the option of the millennium to becoming a disgrace» .
“Sui Generis” was sponsored by the Regional Council, the Region of Sardinia, the Municipality of Cagliari, Fnomceo, and the National Council of Forensics. Gender violence in the digital world was also at the center of the debate. “Without forgetting a status quo unworthy of a civil society: 132 years are needed, as emerges from the Global gender gap 2022 report, to achieve full gender equality ,” summarizes Susanna Pisano (Order of Journalists). The scientific secretariat, with Tina Baldussi, Anna Rita Ecca, Rosanna Mura, Martina Olla, Susanna Pisano and Angela Quaquero for the four professional Orders involved, closed the proceedings with satisfaction: “There was a timely response from colleagues. We aim to break down perspectives that see women penalized, debased, paid less and with fewer career opportunities than their male colleagues. We successfully involved the main institutions at the table in the event.”
