Farewell to Arnaldo Forlani , the former Christian Democrat leader died in Rome at the age of 97.
Born in Pesaro on 8 December 1925, he was one of the leading exponents of the Christian Democrats, a high-ranking politician who held various top positions not only as secretary of the White Whale but also in the government.
He was president and vice president of the Council, minister of foreign affairs, defense and state holdings. He was secretary of the Christian Democrats in the four-year period 1969-1973 and later in the three-year period 1989-1992 , the years of the Caf, the acronym that indicated the triangle of political power formed by Forlani together with Giulio Andreotti and Bettino Craxi.
For a long time he was chairman of the party's National Council. Candidate for the presidency of the Republic in 1992, he was hampered by friendly fire within the DC.
Between the P2 scandal, the collapse of the Crusader shield and the beginning of the Mani Pulite investigation, he resigned as secretary in October 1992. In 1994, after a stay in Parliament for nine legislatures, starting in 1958, he he reapplied. In the Enimont Forlani trial he received a guarantee notice and was sentenced to two years and four months in prison for illegal financing. The penalty was replaced with assignment to social service and expiated through collaboration with Caritas.
