Appendicitis is a sudden and rapid inflammation of the appendix, a thin organ in the shape of a small cylindrical tube located in the lower right side of the abdomen. 5 to 10 centimeters long, it is located in the blind colon, a few centimeters from where the small intestine enters the colon. Appendicitis is a common disease at any age, in both men and women, but occurs mainly between the ages of 6 and 30. The main cause is the presence of material trapped inside the small cavity inside the appendix. In the absence of rapid medical intervention, it can perforate itself, causing an abscess or peritonitis, which is the spread of the infection to the membrane that lines the abdominal cavity and organs. Appendicitis, therefore, represents a medical emergency. The cure, in most cases, is surgery to remove the appendix.
The talk "15 minutes with ..." is edited by Aou Cagliari News, the newspaper of the university hospital. Agile and simple format, it provides 15 minutes of question and answer with the specialists and the possibility for the public to ask questions live.
