Antibiotics: what to avoid eating during treatment?

Dr. Pietro Senette, nutritionist, answers this question.

«Antibiotics, drugs prescribed to fight infections caused by bacterial pathogens, are often extremely aggressive both on the mucous membranes of the gastrointestinal system and above all on our intestinal microbiota. The latter, which is no longer new, represents a fundamental part of our body like any other vital organ: it must therefore be protected and cared for properly. During antibiotic therapies we therefore have one more reason to be devoted to a healthy diet: green light to foods rich in soluble fibre, including fruit, vegetables in general and nutritious whole grains, taking care to cook them properly to guarantee their correct digestibility. In fact, these foods support the army of good bacteria that live in our intestines, promoting healing and the general health of our body. Instead, let's especially avoid industrial foods and dishes that are excessively rich in fat: they would prolong digestion and end up tiring our intestines which are already put to the test by drug therapy."
